First published in 1986 The Nativity is still my very favourite Christmas picture book. Julie Vivas's work is as always beautiful, earthy and full of wit and I love the nod to biblical language. And Gabriel is so cool. With his great tattered wings and hobnail boots, he's just the kind of angel I would like to hang out with. xx

ReplyDeletei love mary's belly as she grows bigger and bigger (and her on that donkey is brilliant). but i agree with you, it's gabriel's wings and boots and holey (ha! holy) robe that gets me. i'm a little bit in love with him.
i'm not religious. not at all. but this book is divine. i love that baby jesus is so cute and that all the people are so warm and normal. i love that there are chickens. julie vivas chickens! my favourite things!
